Skye Terriers are descended from native Terriers on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Hebrides. According to legend, Skye Terriers were first bred in the seventeenth century from Maltese dogs that survived a shipwreck in the Hebrides and mated with local dogs. This has been disproved. Greyfriars Bobby was a famous Skye Terrier to whom a statue was erected. Skye Terriers may be descended from Viking dogs. Skye Terriers were popular with Queen Victoria.
