According to legend, Skye Terriers were first bred in the seventeenth century from Maltese dogs that survived a shipwreck in the Hebrides and mated with local dogs. This has been disproved. Skye Terriers may be descended from Viking dogs. Skye Terriers were popular with Queen Victoria.
